Many residents living in Pine Rivers District of the Moreton Bay Regional Council are privileged to share their backyards with koalas. The main koala suburbs are Bray Park, Bunya, Cashmere, Dakabin, Eatons Hill, Joyner, Kallangur, Kurwongbah, Lawnton, Mango Hill, Petrie, Strathpine, Warner and Whiteside.

The Pine Rivers Koala Care Association Inc. (PRKCAI) was established in 1995 and operates as a local community group within the Pine Rivers District of Moreton Bay. Our Association began its work by recording the numbers of koalas hit by motor vehicles, attacked by dogs and struck down by stress related and communicable diseases.

At the moment the EPA classifies the koala as "regionally vulnerable in the South East Queensland Bio-region". Statistical evidence gathered to date indicates the koala is in serious trouble. Koalas can no longer rely on diminishing remnant bushland. These days much of the koalas habitat is on private property which means we as residents of Pine Rivers District need to do more to ensure the survival of the koala for future generations. Without human intervention to save these precious and unique animals, we may be seeing the beginning of the end for koalas in our urban areas.
