From the Vault
The Association has been around for a long time, as can be seen in the Our Beginnings page.
On this page here, we want to take you directly to old event photos or pages with historical newsletters that we've managed to unearth. Stories from the past that might make you giggle or find unbelievable. Also, aimed at those who would like to delve more into the history of the Association.
Did you know that Old Petrie Town on Dayboro Rd was formerly known as North Pine Country Park. The Association used to hold training days there. Gympie Road and Dixon Street intersection used to be a big roundabout and the Santa Parade used to travel down Gympie Road on it's way to the park.
Who'd have believed it??? Back in October 2008 this newspaper article about one of our rescues. False nails made all the difference to this little fellow.

Pine Rivers Country Park (now known as Old Petrie Town) was the location for training days. A stuffed toy koala would be hoisted up a tree on a rope. The volunteers would then practice with their poles and nets to capture the koala and bring him down safely.
How times have changed. These days, you can't cuddle a koala and rules and regulations dictate how long a koala can be out in public. Any event where live animals will be on show, appropriate fencing is now required between the animals and the public. Check out these photos where the Association's President at the time, David Horstman OAM, is giving a talk on a low platform stage, surrounded by people. A Qld Parks Ranger was present.
The Association and Coral Hounslow, in particular, would get creative and design a float for the Santa Parade. We won the best float many years in a row. Shutting down Gympie Road for a parade, wouldn't happen these days.
Minutes and the Agenda prepared for the April 2012 meeting show there were issues with developments even back then.
Eucalyptus kabiana (also known as Mt Beerwah mallee) is classed as a vulnerable species. The Association was gifted a number of plants, which were planted around our district in Moreton Bay. To certify these were not "stolen" from Mt Beerwah, a letter was provided by the University of Sunshine Coast. The old Moreton Bay Regional Council also received trees to see how they would survive in the area. Here's hoping these precious trees have not been cleared during development in the intervening years as access to the trees and seed gathering are now halted. If you know you have one of these still surviving near you, please let us know via the Contact Us
See the information and story which appeared on our 2016 Facebook Page
The trees were utilised in the 2016 National Tree Day as per this article

Wild Koala Day is always held on the first Sunday of May each year. Back then, the venue was known as North Pine Rivers Park (Old Petrie Town today). Some community stands today are the same as back then.

Winner of the bike, kindly donated by the Hon. Peter Dutton MP Federal Member for Dickson is Emily!
Emily's bedtime story that night was "I am not a bear!"
Her dad, Mat, said that he never wins anything. He also said that he (and Emily) hoped that these events would heighten interest and concern for Koalas.
More than 16yrs in association with Old Petrie Town, we were still holding the Wild Koala Day.
Before websites, social media and apps became the norm for keeping in the loop, there were newsletters. Below are some we've managed to get our hands on. We hope to revive these going forward.
