Bundalong Working Bee Feb 2026

Bundalong Planting Feb 2026 was for 200 plants. The work supervised from above by a local koala. The planting at YMCA Bundalong Camp was funded with a grant from the City of Moreton Bay - Communities Activities Grant. The weather may have been grey, but the light drizzle meant the working bee went ahead as planned. Twelve hearty souls turned up, including Councillor Cath Tonks, to get our hands dirty. We also had an untagged female koala supervising from above.

Janet, Habitat Coordinator, had organised the holes to be dug before Sunday morning and a plant was already sitting in each hole. Two hundred plants waiting for the enthusiastic volunteers to get stuck in! Janet supervised with instructions on what she wanted to be done. Bury them deep!!!

A fertiliser tablet was popped in, the plant was planted, then others followed along and put protective covers on. Meanwhile, others hand watered using the five-litre containers. The trees most likely to be nibbled by the local wallaby had sturdier wire fencing placed around them.

The rain held off and everything was in the ground with a cleanup of tools and planter tubes taking place. By 9.30am we were able to stop and socialise over morning tea. Emma had spotted a lone bat hanging in one of the trees. A check on the Bat Rescue website, confirmed there might be an issue as they roost in numbers, not alone. Emma hung around to show a rescuer where it was. (People who handle bats have to be specially vaccinated due to the diseases they carry).

A big thank you to everyone who came along. YMCA Bundalong Camp Manager, Graeme Ferguson, would also like to thank the City of Moreton Bay for their Communities Activities Grant which funded the planting event. As per the affirmation of our furry supervisor, Bundalong YMCA Camp is becoming an important corridor for the koalas in the area. Watch out for our working bees to help maintain the area over the coming months.
